Addie è un'orfanella novenne che Moze, dichiarandosi grande amico della madre defunta prende con sé, assicurando che la condurrà nel Missouri, a St. Joseph, presso la zia Billie. In realtà il giovane, che vive di espedienti, sfrutta la bimba per ricattare un debitore della defunta estorcendogli 200 dollari.
