Fay e Tom sono due veterani delle guerre sentimentali, ugualmente traumatizzati: Fay, studiosa di tradizioni popolari, ha una passione per le sirene che la assorbe totalmente e la rende incapace di stringere un legame stabile con un uomo; Tom è un celebre conduttore radiofonico che invece di legami ne ha stretti fin troppi, visto che ha alle spalle tre matrimoni falliti.
