Clayton, ex sceriffo di Jefferson, salva dall'assedio di alcuni bounty killer il giovane Philip, che era riuscito ad evadere e a rifugiarsi sui monti dopo che, accusato ingiustamente dai tre prepotenti fratelli Saxon di aver ucciso il loro padre, detto "Il Patriarca", era stato condannato a morte da un giudice corrotto.
